Seniors were required to complete a Senior Portfolio in order to participate in the graduation ceremony on June 23, 2010. For verification that all portfolio requirements have been met on time, students circulated a Senior Portfolio Clearance Sheet (available from Advisory Teachers) and obtained four different verifying signatures from specified school authorities prior to absolute deadlines. Completely signed Clearance Sheets were then submitted to Senior Advisory Teachers who retained the sheets for their official records until May 25. The final step was for the Advisory Teachers to submit Advisory rosters and signed Clearance Sheets to Career Counselor Ms. Harvey. Students were repeatedly reminded to make and retain copies of signed sheets for their own records as well.
The portfolio documents were intended to serve as a resource for our graduates who can leave school with and use their polished resumes to gain entry-level employment. Our goal is for students to set high expectations when looking for work and applying for jobs that align with their actual career goals and passions. Their portfolio should prepare them to talk about themselves in a way that highlights their strengths and abilities. The more confident students are in doing this, the better they will come across to a future employer in an interview. It is ever more important for our seniors to leave high school well-prepared to gain entry into the workforce, especially when they are facing such a competitive market in today's recessionary economy. Senior Portfolios must include: - A Cover Letter (to apply for a possible position or program)
- A Resume
- A References Page (with authentic adult contacts, non-family members)
- A Completed Work Readiness Certification (WRC) Job Application (See "links")
- A Page of Selected Interview Questions and ORIGINAL Answers
- Career Pathway CareerCruising.com Print-out submitted to Ms. Harvey in CCC
- Colleges I'm Applying To / My Game Plan Online (up-to-date student account at connection.naviance.com/ushca)
- University High School Senior Survey 2010 (paper version available May 5-May 14)
Seniors will have an incentive this year to complete their portfolio in a timely way: the opportunity to receive Work Readiness Certificates issued by the L.A. Youth at Work Program and the L.A. Chamber of Commerce. Candidates must complete the first 5 items by the early deadline in January, 2010 to sign up for mock interviews given by community business partners and potential employers beginning in February, 2010.
