Attendance Policy

Regular attendance at school is essential to academic achievement. Every student at University High School is expected to attend each class on time every day. Parents are expected to monitor students’ progress and communicate with the school when there is a question or concern.

WHEN A STUDENT IS ABSENT

The Phone Master automatic parent notification system calls home in the evening the day following a student absence from any class period with a recorded message to inform the parent of the absence. Parents who do not want to be notified that their child is absent must contact the Attendance Office. Students are permitted to make up any work missed due an excused absence. We recommend they obtain contact information from fellow students so they can be made aware of any work they may have missed. Students who return from an absence of more than five days must bring a doctor’s note.

WHEN A STUDENT RETURNS FROM AN ABSENCE

The student brings a note signed by the parent indicating the date(s) of and the reason for the absence. The note must include the student’s full name, date of birth and a valid telephone number. Absence forms are available in the Attendance Office.
When students are absent from period one only (partial day absence), the parent must notify the Attendance Office in person or by telephone on the day of the absence or a truancy will be issued. Students with excessive truancies can be subject to a citation. No written notes are accepted for a period one absence.

The Attendance Office opens at 7:30 a.m. Students returning from an absence must arrive at school in time to be re-admitted and to report to their first class on time.

WHEN A STUDENT IS TARDY OR TRUANT

University High School maintains an On Time Policy. The Phone Master automatic parent notification system calls home in the evening the day following a student tardy from any class period with a recorded message to inform the parent of the tardy. Students are not permitted to enter any class after the period begins without a tardy pass. Student who are tardy are to report to the main entrance for a tardy pass.

Both the Dean’s Office and the Attendance Office issue WARNINGS and VIOLATIONS to students who cut class or who are truant from school. Warnings and violations can lead to disciplinary action and transfer to another school.
